An Answer to Prayer – Guardians of Hope
In 2023 the Maternity and Surgical Additions were completed at Waterfield Medical Center and since that time 38 babies have been delivered. The Surgical Theater, however, has not been operational due to the need for surgical equipment and furnishings. It has been our prayer that a source of funding could be identified.
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Paul Rollins and Nate Tollefson who are the founders and board members of Guardians of Hope have been searching for missional opportunities in West Africa in education, clean water and health care. They have identified post war Liberia as an area of great need so in June they asked for established Liberian missions to present their needs to Guardians of Hope in meetings in Monrovia. HWHL Medical Director, Dr. Chris Hena was one of the missions asked to present.
Paul Rollins said as Dr. Chris was speaking he felt something very special as if the Holy Spirit was speaking to him. Paul and Nate immediately asked if they could come see Waterfield in Kakata the next day. Their initial intent was to provide an X-Ray facility, but when they learned of the need for equipment in the Surgical Theater they agreed to provide funding now for the Surgical Theater with support of the X-Ray building and equipment in the near future.
Equipment has been purchased and delivered to the Surgical Theater (see photos below) and Dr. Chris is working on the necessary staffing in order to begin offering surgical procedures at Waterfield. We thank God for connecting Guardians of Hope and HWHL and offer our sincere thanks to Paul and Nate for making this ministry a reality.
Independence Day Outreach
Every year on Liberia’s July 26th Independence Day. HWHL provides a special celebration for Kakata children. This year over 750 children were fed and given gifts of clothing, shoes and books from Asbury Church’s Barrels of Love. See photos below of Waterfield staff preparing food and children who have come to the Independence Day Celebration.
Meet our Waterfield Staff: Kerbeh Konogboh
My name is Kerbeh M. Konogboh and I am 31years old. I am married and I have a son. I graduated in 2013 from the Lango Lippaye High School. I give God the glory for his blessings and the many doors he continues to open for me. I’m grateful.
I came from a family of six, my mother, father and my three siblings. We are not rich but God has been faithful. While growing up, we had difficult times. I and my siblings couldn’t forward our education until the government announced that they had the public school free; that was when we went back to school.
Finally, with the help of God I graduated in 2013 from the public school. I was unable to achieve higher education due to [lack of] financial support. Since I had interest in medicine, I took advantage of the Barcolleh Standard Nursing Assistant Program in 2015 [for] which God was able to provide funds for me through one of my aunties.
I graduated with honors [but] I had no job and was unable to go back to school. After few months, I met one of my friends and he give me information about a facility called Waterfield that [had] a vacancy for community health workers. Immediately I got the information, I sent my application, [and a] few days later, I was called for an interview. I went for the interview, and I was accepted to work as a Community Health Worker.
I started working with Waterfield February 12, 2019. [A] few years after, God again opened another opportunity for me to pursue higher education through my Boss (Dr. Christiana K. Hena) who connected me to her nephew (Mr. George Toby) residing in the United States of America. He agreed to sponsor me [at] the Cuttington University Junior College.
I am presently a senior student [at] the Junior College studying nursing. Being excellent as a student is [through] God’s divine wisdom. Upon graduation, it is my prayer that God grants me more knowledge and wisdom in providing services to the Waterfield Primary Health Care Center as a registered nurse. I am looking forward [to] greater opportunities. I am forever grateful to the Lord; he has been faithful; His Spirit continues to carry me through.
