Bill’s Testimony
After a long day of ‘hustling’ to earn a livelihood in Liberia by working as a motor bike transport driver, 29 year old Bill scraped his leg on one of the steps as he entered his home. Though the area on his leg was irritated, the following morning he continued his motorbike driving work. At the end of the day, he noticed a lot of pain and swelling in the injured leg and by the end of the day, he was barely able to walk. Eventually, his parents took him to the ‘sick bush’ for ‘traditional’ treatment. It is a common practice from time in the past in Liberia for people to turn to traditional medicine practice as a first resort.
The accessibility and affordability of scientific medicine coupled with a 49% adult literacy rate and an ingrained faith in trditional healers among the population, indigenous medicines are sometimes the first line of defence against diseases; especially limb related illnesses. The ‘sick bush’ exacerbated Bill’s condition to a critical point where his parents had no alternative but to take him home to die.
The Waterfield Clinic Community Outreach Team was doing awareness in Bill’s community and happened upon Bill’s condition. Since Bill could not walk, an outreach treatment was established for healthcare workers from Waterfield Clinic to make scheduled visits to Bill’s house for would care dressing and treatment. Eventually, Bill slowly recovered to the point where after a few months he could come to the clinic for wound dressings every other day. One year later, Bill is still receiving free treatment and is on the road to recovery.
