The Eye Equipment Finally Arrived!
About a year and a half ago, negotiations started with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company for ophthalmic equipment. My husband, Caleb, and I were living in Harbel in Firestone housing at that time in Liberia. One day, someone in management saw me in the area and asked me what I did and how come we were living in the Firestone District of Margibi County.
Once they found out that I was an Ophthalmic Technician missionary, they wanted to hire me to work for Firestone. They were concerned about their drivers’ vision and wanted me to check their eyes.
I met with Ed Garcia, the president at the time and Don Darden. It was decided that I would see Firestone employees free of charge in lieu of donated ophthalmic equipment. I only had the very basic equipment and needed a whole exam room of equipment.
It took a year later to obtain the eye equipment from a retiring Ophthalmologist in California. It was shipped in April 2019 and just arrived at the end of June.
Most of the donations ended up at Healthy Woman, Healthy Liberia’s Waterfield Primary Health Care Center (WPHCC) in Kakata under the medical direction of Dr. Chris Hena. This equipment will be very beneficial to visiting Ophthalmologists who want to perform cataract or other eye surgery when they donate their time at the Center.
We were awe struck at the amount of equipment donated! We received 2 complete exam rooms of equipment: testing equipment, a YAG laser and machines to grind glasses, plus much more!
As far as Firestone is concerned, they have a well furnished exam room set up at Du-Side Hospital, which is operated by the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. It is where I see patients, including their employees.
We thank God for His provision to help the people of Liberia.
